Philippine Flights and Travel Tips - 4 Modes of Transport to Go Around in the Philippines
The experience of riding the different modes of transportation on your Philippine flights and travel is already a unique experience worth remembering. For any foreigner, this could be one of the highlights of his trip that he can regale his friends with back home.
Here, we list 4 of the different ways you can move around in a city. These transportations range from your most common taxi to something named after orbiting satellites.
1. Taxi - The easiest, most convenient form of transportation anyone could have in the country. It is comfortable, you get shielded from the dust, heat or rain and it you are very familiar with it.
Another plus with getting a taxi is you get a chance to talk with the driver who could prove to be a very big help in giving you tips on the places and unique characters of the locality. However, just like in any country around the world, there may be some drivers who are out to take advantage of you, so better be careful with your dealings with them.
Economical tip in getting a taxi at the airport: If your Philippine flights and travel is on a tight budget (e.g., you are on a personal trip, not on company expense) don't get a cab from the arrival area in the airport-the taxi driver will charge you a fixed astronomical price regardless of your destination. You can walk to the adjacent departure area, where you can get a cab that just dropped off a departing passenger-they charge they way it is supposed to be: by the meter.
2. Jeepney - this type of transportation is a Philippine icon that started appearing after the American G.I.s left the country with surplus military jeeps. This works like a bus but the passengers are seated facing each other in two long rows running the length of the vehicle.
What is good with this type of transportation that could definitely help you save on your Philippine travel is, unlike the taxi, you pay relatively low fixed price for each destination. You also get to be close to the locals and may strike a polite conversation.
3. Tricycle (motorcycle with a sidecar) - while the jeepney is much cheaper -about as much as 90% less than what you would pay a cab -it is limited to dropping you off along the route. The tricycle is much like a taxi, it picks and drops you off to your destination "door-to-door." Tricycle is much cheaper and it could transport you through alleys and heavily congested streets. This is a motorcycle with a passenger cab attached to it, and it can transport a legal passenger capacity of 6 but in some remote areas, it would be a common sight seeing one with as much as 10 to 12 passengers (on the roof, hanging by the sides and back, etc.)
4. Skylab / habal-habal - if your Philippine travel brings you to remote barrios in the country, there is a good chance that you will see (or even ride!) one of these mode of transport worthy of entry in the Guiness World Record for the highest number of passengers on a single motorcycle. This may even rival the stunts of the acrobats of Cirque du Soleil.
Imagine an ordinary motorcycle with a wooden plank fixed across the seat (right behind the driver) where passengers (about three on each side) ride with their feet dangling on the road. Add another two in front and more behind. It definitely is a spectacle to see. Riding on one of these is like riding a rollercoaster.
